History: Although many attempts were made previously, the Wright brothers' flights in 1903 are most commonly recognized as the first controlled, stable flights. Since then, planes (and their more antiquated predecessors, blimps) and helicopters have shaped the development of the modern world. Used for travel, trade, weather observation, warfare, and more, much of civilization today would be very different if not for man's dream to ascend into the heavens.
